Third Part of The Chinese New Year ‘09 Sets. ‘Free Hugs’ (Set 3/3)
Set one. (1/3) Titled. What is ’street’ photography.
Set two. (2/3) Titled. ‘Street’ Photography and Perspective.
Set three…
In relation to my first post above: are the shots below street photography? I ask myself, does the content of the photograph need to be clear of its street heritage to make it ’street’? If the subjects remain similar (like the shots below) and the story circulates around the same foundations and emotions (like the shots below), but the background and surroundings taking on a lesser role in portraying the whole story then, I’d suggest it would fail the genre. In this case clearly the story is aided considerably by the background and assumed surroundings, and I feel they do convey an aspect of street life. Hmm, I guess I have to rate them as street after all.
Two certified beautiful people amongst thousands, armed only with some white board and black paint, took Leicester square by the waist and brought joy to many a heart by offering free hugs to all and any who wanted or needed. It certainly made me grin from ear to ear.

I spent ten minutes or so dodging legs and pushchairs from a across the wide pavement in Leicester Square trying to grab these moments. I totally admire people like this who just take it on themselves to spread a little joy. Their quiet and unassuming offer was missed by many but easily spotted for its sincerity by those with less cynical eyes.
There may be a secondary story within these shots that some of you may spot; if I suggest that it makes one of these girls even more remarkable then you’ll know we’re thinking the same thing. Its not an assumption I want to write down in public, is it.

Got a smile on your face yet?
